Back to newsThe White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in western Crete experienced a dramatic increase in snow coverage between April 29 and May 4, 2026, with the snowed area growing approximately 3.5 to 3.7 times larger in just six days. This unusually significant late-spring snowfall is visible across the mountain range, which peaks at over 2,400 metres.
For visitors planning hikes or drives through the White Mountains, conditions may be hazardous at higher elevations. Mountain paths, including routes in and around the Samaria Gorge area, can be slippery or partially blocked. Check trail and road status with local authorities before heading into the mountains. Lower elevations and coastal areas remain unaffected. The snow is expected to melt gradually as temperatures rise through May, but hikers should carry warm layers and check weather forecasts before any high-altitude excursion.
