Back to newsGreece's independent tax authority (AADE) has launched a nationwide inspection campaign targeting businesses in the accommodation, food and beverage, and private transport sectors. The operation uses new digital monitoring tools and has already identified around 1,400 businesses that failed to declare VAT correctly. In Crete, as across the rest of Greece, hotels, rental properties, restaurants, and drivers are among those being scrutinized. For tourists, the practical impact is straightforward: businesses operating legally will issue receipts for all transactions, and visitors should expect and request a receipt for every purchase, meal, or ride. Paying by card rather than cash also helps ensure transactions are properly recorded. The campaign reflects a broader Greek government effort to improve tax compliance in the tourism sector ahead of the 2026 summer season.
