Back to newsGreek police (ELAS) are implementing special traffic measures across Crete on May 1st (Protomagia, or May Day) in response to significantly higher road traffic expected during the public holiday. A temporary ban on heavy goods vehicles and trucks will be in effect on main roads throughout the holiday period to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.
Tourists driving or traveling by road on May 1st should expect heavier than usual traffic, particularly on routes connecting major towns and coastal areas, as locals traditionally head to the countryside for picnics and outdoor celebrations. Plan extra travel time if driving between cities or heading to popular natural sites. Rental car drivers are not affected by the truck ban, but road conditions may be slower than normal. Check local signage and follow police directions at any temporary control points.
