Greece Rescues 131 Migrants, Busts Smuggling Ring

Saturday, 2 May 2026/SourceCretan Magazine/1 min read
Greek coast guard and police carried out a series of operations resulting in the rescue of 131 foreign nationals and the arrest of three suspected people smugglers. The incidents took place across multiple locations including Samos island, and the Cretan cities of Rethymno and Ierapetra. Authorities conducted pursuits at sea and on land, dismantling smuggling networks involved in irregular migration. There are no direct implications for tourists visiting these areas. Rethymno and Ierapetra remain safe destinations and normal activities are unaffected. The operations reflect ongoing efforts by Greek authorities to manage irregular migration routes through the Aegean and southern Crete, particularly around the Ierapetra coastline which sits close to major sea lanes between Africa and Europe.
