Back to newsSeveral streets in the old town of Chania are currently without street lighting, including Kondylaki, Portou, and Skoufon streets. The lack of illumination is not noticeable while shops and restaurants remain open, as business lighting compensates. However, once establishments close for the night, these narrow lanes become completely dark.
Tourists staying in or exploring the old town after hours should take care when walking these streets in the evening. Carrying a phone torch is advisable. The affected streets are typical of the historic Venetian quarter and are frequented by visitors heading to and from accommodation, restaurants, and the harbour area. No timeline has been given for when the lighting issue will be resolved. Visitors should plan accordingly and stick to well-lit main routes after shops close if they prefer not to navigate in the dark.
