Back to newsAn invasive fish species with exceptionally strong teeth, capable of cutting fishing lines and gear, has been spreading across the Mediterranean, including Greek waters around Crete. The species, believed to have entered through the Suez Canal, poses a challenge for local fishermen whose equipment it damages. Greek authorities and fishing cooperatives have introduced incentive programs paying fishermen to catch and remove these fish, helping control the population while compensating for gear losses.
For visitors swimming or snorkeling in Cretan waters, the risk of direct encounter is low, but beachgoers should avoid handling unfamiliar fish if one washes ashore. The species is not safe to eat and should not be consumed. If you spot an unusual fish, report it to local port authorities rather than attempting to handle it yourself.
