Back to newsThe Regional Council of Crete has formally requested that the existing planned route of the BOAK highway be preserved through eastern Rethymno, pushing back against proposals to alter the alignment. The BOAK (Boreios Odikos Axonas Kritis) is the major east-west motorway currently under construction across northern Crete, set to significantly improve travel times between Heraklion, Rethymno, and Chania. The council's position aims to protect communities and infrastructure along the established corridor. For visitors, the BOAK will eventually replace the often-congested coastal national road, reducing drive times considerably once completed. In the meantime, travelers driving through eastern Rethymno should expect ongoing roadworks and potential delays along the existing national road. Checking local traffic conditions before long drives across the island is recommended.
