Back to newsFire authorities have issued an elevated fire danger warning for the Heraklion and Lasithi regional units of Crete on June 24, 2026. These two prefectures, which cover a large portion of central and eastern Crete including popular areas around Heraklion city, the Lasithi Plateau, and Agios Nikolaos, are classified as high-risk zones for the day. Tourists visiting these areas should avoid lighting fires, barbecues, or discarding cigarettes outdoors. Do not park vehicles on dry grass. If you spot a fire, call the Greek emergency number 112 immediately. Hiking in forested or rural areas carries additional risk on high-danger days. Check local advisories before heading into nature reserves or countryside locations, and follow all instructions from local authorities.
