Back to newsThe Samaria Gorge, one of Crete's most popular hiking destinations in the White Mountains of western Crete, has been at the center of an ongoing dispute between local authorities over who holds responsibility for opening and closing the gorge for safety reasons. Officials have been passing responsibility back and forth, and the situation has now been referred to the Greek National Meteorological Service (EMY), with authorities concluding that more accurate weather forecasting is needed before reliable safety decisions can be made. Visitors planning to hike the gorge should check its official status before traveling, as closures can occur with little notice due to weather or safety conditions. The gorge entrance is located near the village of Omalos, roughly one hour from Chania.
