Back to newsThe Municipality of Heraklion is running its "Open Courtyards" program for the third consecutive year, opening the grounds of 12 local schools to the public from July 15 to August 14. The initiative, organized by the city's Deputy Mayor of Education, transforms schoolyards into free accessible green spaces during the summer months when schools are closed. For visitors staying in or passing through Heraklion, the open courtyards offer shaded outdoor areas to rest, particularly useful during the peak summer heat. The 12 participating schools are spread across the city. The program runs daily throughout the period and requires no registration or entry fee. It reflects the municipality's ongoing effort to make public space more accessible to residents and visitors alike during the busy tourist season.
