The White Mountains Traverse in Crete crosses the spectacular Lefka Ori range, offering dramatic alpine scenery with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and Aegean Sea. Along the way, you'll encounter limestone ridges, rocky terrain, traditional mountain villages, and pristine alpine meadows. The 2000m elevation gain demands excellent fitness and mountain hiking experience. Best visited May through October, when weather is stable and trails are passable. The traverse typically starts from the northern foothills near Chania, with access via local villages. Bring plenty of water since none is available on the trail; this is essential. Wear sturdy hiking boots for rough, rocky terrain. Start early in summer to maximize daylight and avoid afternoon heat. Consider hiring a local guide familiar with the terrain. Acclimatize before attempting this challenging route, and carry detailed maps or use GPS navigation to stay oriented in the remote, exposed terrain.
