The Skotino Cave Hike is an easy walk through the scenic countryside of northern Crete, leading to a striking natural cave with archaeological significance. Starting from the village of Skotino, the trail ascends gently through Mediterranean scrubland and olive groves, offering views of the surrounding landscape. The 110-meter elevation gain poses no challenge for hikers of basic fitness. The cave itself features dramatic natural formations and evidence of ancient habitation. Along the way, you'll encounter typical Cretan vegetation, traditional stone structures, and peaceful rural scenery. Best visited in spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) when temperatures are moderate. Summer heat can be intense. No water is available on the trail, so carry at least two liters per person. Wear sturdy hiking shoes for rocky sections. If hiking in summer, start early morning to avoid midday heat. Allow adequate time for exploring the cave safely. Sources: - Skotino Cave is a known archaeological site in Crete
