# Psiloritis Plateau Trail The Psiloritis Plateau Trail offers a challenging alpine experience on Crete's highest mountain. This demanding 1,100m climb rewards hikers with expansive views of barren, windswept plateau landscape dominated by rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. The trail passes through dramatic high-altitude scenery approaching Crete's summit region, with sweeping vistas across the island. Suitable only for experienced, fit hikers accustomed to steep ascents and extended elevation gain, this route demands excellent cardiovascular fitness. Late spring through early autumn provides optimal conditions; summer heat requires an early morning start. Access begins from the Nida Plateau village area, approximately 45 minutes from Rethymno. Essential preparation includes carrying ample water (none available on trail), sturdy hiking boots for rocky terrain, sun protection, and warm layers for exposed upper elevations. Begin very early to complete the hike before afternoon heat and storms become hazardous.
