The Paleokastro to Stravomyti Trail offers a moderate hiking experience through Crete's diverse landscape. This trail winds through traditional villages, olive groves, and rugged terrain, showcasing authentic Cretan scenery with panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The 280-meter elevation gain requires a reasonable fitness level, making it suitable for experienced hikers comfortable with sustained climbs. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are ideal seasons, offering pleasant temperatures and clear visibility without summer heat. Winter brings rainfall, making the trail challenging. Starting from Paleokastro village, the trail is accessible by car, with parking available near the trailhead. Essential preparation includes bringing at least two liters of water per person, as no water sources exist on the route. Wear sturdy hiking boots for uneven terrain and rocky sections. Starting early, especially in summer, ensures safer conditions and adequate daylight for the hike.
