The Kato Zakros Gorge and Coastal Trail offers a moderate hiking experience through one of eastern Crete's most dramatic landscapes. Hikers descend through towering limestone cliffs, past the remnants of ancient structures, and emerge at a secluded pebble beach with crystal-clear Mediterranean waters. The terrain features varied landscapes including rocky passages, sparse vegetation, and stunning coastal views. This trail suits hikers with basic to moderate fitness levels. The 300-meter elevation loss is manageable but requires steady footing on uneven terrain. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal seasons, offering comfortable temperatures and excellent visibility. Summer hiking is possible but brings intense heat. Start early from the village of Kato Zakros, which has basic facilities and parking. Bring substantial water as none exists on the trail. Wear sturdy hiking boots for rocky sections. Allow extra time for exploring the beach and swimming.
