# Gramvoussa Fortress Hike Explore one of Crete's most scenic coastal trails, leading to the historic Gramvoussa Fortress overlooking the Libyan Sea. This moderate hike climbs 210 meters through Mediterranean scrubland, rewarding you with stunning turquoise waters, white cliffs, and panoramic views of Balos Lagoon. The fortress ruins and surrounding landscape offer excellent photography opportunities. A reasonable fitness level is recommended due to the elevation gain and rugged terrain. Best visited October through May when temperatures are mild; summer heat is intense with no shade or water available on the trail. Access the trail from the Balos area in northwest Crete. Start early to avoid afternoon crowds and heat. Essential tips: bring at least two liters of water per person, wear sturdy hiking boots for rocky sections, apply sunscreen, and wear a hat. The trail is moderately exposed, so check weather before departing. Allow adequate daylight for safe descent.
