Balos Lagoon Coastal Path

The Balos Lagoon Coastal Path showcases stunning Aegean views and one of Crete's most photogenic destinations. This easy trail features dramatic white-sand beaches, turquoise lagoon waters, and rocky coastal landscapes. You'll pass through scrubland typical of northwestern Crete with occasional wildflowers in spring. The route suits most fitness levels, with minimal elevation gain around 100m. Best visited April through October when weather is warm and dry. Access the trail from the village of Kaliviani, with parking near the trailhead. Start early in summer to avoid heat and crowds. Bring abundant water, as none is available on the trail. Wear sturdy hiking shoes for rocky, uneven terrain. Sun protection is essential. Morning light offers excellent photography. Plan three to four hours for the full experience, including time at the lagoon. This accessible hike rewards visitors with some of Crete's most memorable Mediterranean scenery.
