The trail winds past archaeological remains and natural springs, offering views of the surrounding Cretan landscape. Moderate fitness is recommended for the 200m elevation change and uneven terrain. Visit between April and June or September to October for ideal conditions. Summer heat makes midday hiking challenging. The trail typically starts near the village of Paleokastro, with parking available in the settlement. Bring at least two liters of water per person, as no reliable water sources exist on the trail. Wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support for rocky sections. Start early, especially in summer, to avoid afternoon heat. Wear sun protection and consider trekking poles for steep descents. This moderately challenging hike rewards with striking gorge views and cultural heritage.
