Assumption Festival in Chania

The Feast of the Assumption of Mary (August 15) is celebrated throughout the Chania region with religious festivals (panigyria) at numerous churches and monasteries. Events include liturgical services, processions, and all-night vigils at prominent sites such as the Stavropegiac Monastery of Gonia Kolymvariou, the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, churches in Platania, Pervoloi, and Agia. Celebrations begin Friday evening, August 14, with evening services, and continue Saturday, August 15, with morning liturgies and festive ceremonies. Thousands of faithful are expected to attend these sacred celebrations to venerate the image of the Virgin Mary.
