# Preveli Beach, Crete Preveli Beach is one of the most distinctive stretches of coastline in Greece, and arguably in the entire Mediterranean. What sets it apart is not just the sand or the water, but the collision of ecosystems: a freshwater river flows out of a gorge, passes through a grove of native Cretan date palms (Phoenix theophrasti), and empties into a turquoise lagoon before meeting the open Libyan Sea. The result is a landscape that feels genuinely wild, somewhere between a tropical river delta and a rocky Aegean cove. There are no sunbeds, no umbrellas, no beach clubs. The beach earns its reputation through natural spectacle alone. ## Getting There Preveli Beach sits on the southern coast of the Rethymno regional unit, roughly 38 kilometers south of Rethymno town. By car, take the E75 toward Rethymno and then head south through the village of Koxare and down through the Kourtaliotis Gorge toward the coast. The road ends at a parking area near the lower Preveli Monastery (Moni Preveli), from which a marked footpath descends to the beach. The descent takes about 15 to 20 minutes one way and involves uneven rocky terrain and steep sections. Wear proper footwear. The climb back up, especially in midday heat, is significantly harder than the descent. Alternatively, boats run daily during summer from both Plakias (roughly 11 kilometers west) and Agia Galini (roughly 20 kilometers east). The boat option eliminates the hike and gives a good view of the coastline, and is worth considering if you are visiting with mobility limitations or simply want a different approach. Schedules and prices vary by operator and season, so check locally. ## Activities and Water Conditions The beach divides naturally into two areas. The lagoon, sheltered by the palm grove and fed by the river, is shallow and calm, with cool freshwater mixing into the sea. This is the most photographed part of Preveli and also the most crowded. Beyond the lagoon mouth, the open beach faces south toward Libya, and the water conditions shift considerably. Waves can be significant when wind picks up, and the seabed transitions quickly from sand to rock. Snorkeling is genuinely rewarding here, particularly around the rocky outcrops on either side of the lagoon where sea life concentrates. Visibility is typically excellent. Swimming in the lagoon itself is generally calm and suitable for confident swimmers. The open beach requires more caution, especially when the south wind (the Notias or Libyan wind) is active. ## Practical Tips Arrive early. By 10am in July and August the beach is crowded, and the path down becomes a two-way stream of people. Arriving before 9am or after 4pm gives you a meaningfully different experience. Bring everything you need: food, water, and shade of your own. The nearest taverna is back up near the monastery road, not on the beach itself. There is no shade on the open beach portion, and the palm grove fills up quickly. Wind patterns matter. The beach faces south and is exposed to the Libyan Sea. When the south wind is strong, the open section becomes choppy and less pleasant for swimming. The lagoon remains calmer in these conditions. Check wind forecasts before visiting if swimming in the open sea is a priority. The path can be treacherous when wet or in direct sun on bare rock. Sandals with grip or light hiking shoes are strongly recommended. ## Best Months to Visit May, June, and September are the best months. The weather is warm, the water temperature is comfortable, and the crowds are manageable. July and August are hot, busy, and can feel relentless by midday. October is quieter still, the water stays warm from the summer, and the light on the gorge and palms is particularly good in autumn. ## Who It Is For Preveli is best suited to independent travelers, couples, hikers, and snorkelers who are comfortable with a physical approach and an unorganized beach. It is not a good choice for families with young children or elderly visitors due to the steep, rocky path. It is not a place to spend a passive day in the sun with a service umbrella. But for anyone who wants to see one of Crete's genuinely remarkable natural sites, it rewards the effort.
