# Kalathas Beach, West Crete Kalathas is a small, sheltered sandy bay on the Akrotiri peninsula, roughly 12 kilometres north of Chania. What sets it apart from the busier beaches of western Crete is its combination of calm, clear water and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere, even in the height of summer. The bay faces north-northwest and is partially protected by a low rocky headland on its western edge, which keeps the water unusually flat on most days. A tiny islet sits just offshore, close enough to swim to, which gives the beach a distinctive character and provides snorkelers with a ready-made destination. The water is shallow for a good stretch from the shore, the sand is fine and light-coloured, and the overall scale of the beach is intimate rather than sprawling. ## Getting There By car, take the road from Chania toward Akrotiri and follow signs for Kalathas or Horafakia. The drive from Chania city centre takes around 20 minutes. The road into the bay is paved and straightforward. A dedicated parking area sits directly above the beach, and while it fills up on busy summer weekends, there is additional roadside space nearby. On foot from Horafakia village, the beach is a short downhill walk of around ten minutes. There is no regular boat service to Kalathas, though it can be reached by private boat or kayak from neighbouring coves. ## Activities and Water Conditions The water at Kalathas is typically calm and clear, with good visibility that makes it well suited to snorkeling. The rocky edges of the bay, particularly around the base of the small islet, support marine life including sea urchins, small fish, and occasional octopus. Bringing your own mask and fins is worthwhile, as rental equipment is not always available on site. Swimming conditions are generally safe for confident swimmers of all ages, and the gradual depth gradient near the shore makes it comfortable for children. The beach does not have organised water sports, which suits its quieter character. Paddleboarding and kayaking are possible here and are sometimes available for hire during peak season. ## Practical Tips Kalathas faces north, which means it catches the prevailing summer winds, known locally as the meltemi, more directly than south-facing beaches. On days when the meltemi is blowing strongly, the water can become choppy and less pleasant for swimming. Mornings are usually calmer than afternoons, making an early arrival a sensible choice both for conditions and for securing a good spot. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for hire along the main stretch of sand. A taverna operates at the back of the beach during the summer season, serving standard Greek beach fare including grilled fish, salads, and cold drinks. The crowd level stays manageable outside of August, and even in peak season the beach does not reach the density of Elafonisi or Balos. ## Best Months to Visit May, June, and September offer the most comfortable combination of warm water, good weather, and fewer visitors. July and August are hot and the beach will be noticeably busier, particularly on weekends when locals from Chania make the short drive out. Water temperatures in June are already around 22 to 23 degrees Celsius and rise through summer. October is still viable for swimming on calm days, and the Akrotiri peninsula remains green and pleasant for walking into the autumn. ## Who It Is Ideal For Kalathas works especially well for families with young children. The shallow entry, calm water on most days, the availability of sunbeds, and the on-site taverna remove most of the logistical friction of a beach day. Couples looking for a beach that is scenic without being overrun will find it satisfying, particularly in June or September. Snorkelers will appreciate the islet and the rocky margins of the bay. It is not a beach for people seeking organised water sports or nightlife nearby, and it lacks the dramatic scenery of the more photogenic western Cretan beaches. What it offers instead is reliability, practicality, and water quality that consistently holds up across the season.
