Storm Warning in Effect Across Crete Today
Crete is under a weather alert this Saturday. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has flagged locally heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms island-wide, with unsettled conditions expected to persist through the weekend. If you are planning outdoor excursions — gorge hikes, beach days, or mountain drives — build flexibility into your itinerary and check the forecast before setting out.
Samaria Gorge Shut on Sunday
The most immediate consequence of the stormy forecast: Samaria Gorge will be closed to visitors on Sunday, June 14. OFYPEKA, the body managing Greek natural parks, made the call due to dangerously strong wind predictions. The 16-kilometre gorge is Crete's single most visited natural attraction. Anyone who had booked a day trip should contact their tour operator immediately for rescheduling options.
Two Separate Accidents at Falasarna — A Clear Safety Warning
The dramatic coastline of Falasarna, one of western Crete's most photographed beaches, was the scene of two serious incidents in the same week. A 30-year-old French tourist fell critically from the rocks near the beach and required a Kissamos Fire Service rescue operation. Separately, a 31-year-old hiker was recovered unconscious after a cliff fall in a remote area of the same coastline. The message is unambiguous: the rocky headlands at Falasarna are genuinely hazardous. Stick to marked paths, avoid scrambling on the cliffs, and exercise extra caution in wet or windy conditions.
Planned Power Outages Across Crete — Saturday, June 13
Residents and self-catering visitors take note: DEDDIE has scheduled maintenance power cuts across several areas of Crete today. These are routine works on the electricity distribution network. Check with your accommodation or local municipality for the specific neighbourhoods and time windows affected in your area.
Kastelli Airport: Crete's Biggest Infrastructure Bet
Looking at the medium term, the new international airport near Kastelli — roughly 25 kilometres east of the current Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis Airport — continues to advance. With a projected capacity of 18 million passengers per year, it will fundamentally reshape air access to the island, which strains every summer under current infrastructure. Opening is anticipated in 2028.
Ancient Cretan Games Return to Heraklion — June 19–21
A genuinely local event for this coming weekend: the 6th Festival of Forgotten Games runs from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 June at Karavolos in Heraklion. Organised with the participation of KEPA and the Municipality of Heraklion, it revives traditional Cretan sports and games that have largely vanished from daily life. A rare chance to see something beyond the standard tourist circuit.
Walk with Loggerhead Turtles Under the Stars
For a calmer summer memory, ARCHELON — Greece's sea turtle protection society — is running its Sea Turtle Beach Walk programme on Crete. Guided nighttime walks along loggerhead turtle nesting beaches offer close-up access to one of the Mediterranean's most protected species, in a managed conservation context. Spaces are limited; book ahead.
