Chania Airport Traffic Surges in April 2026
Chania International Airport (CHQ) recorded strong passenger growth in April 2026, welcoming 231,991 travelers - a 16.5% increase compared to April 2025. According to Fraport Greece, the operator of CHQ, this monthly performance reflects growing momentum in Crete's tourism sector, driven primarily by a significant surge in international arrivals.
International passenger numbers reached 155,091 in April 2026, representing a striking 26.4% jump year-over-year. This double-digit growth signal reflects increased European travel to the region during the spring season and suggests strong recovery in international tourism to Crete's northwestern corner. Domestic traffic, by contrast, grew modestly at 0.7%, reaching 76,900 passengers - evidence that holiday travel within Greece remained steady but unspectacular month-over-month.
Domestic vs. International: A Tale of Two Markets
The divergence between domestic and international growth tells an important story about Chania's role in Greece's broader tourism network. While domestic passengers represented about one-third of April's total, international travelers accounted for two-thirds - underscoring CHQ's significance as a gateway for European and international visitors exploring Crete's western region.
April's traffic data followed a solid March performance, when CHQ handled 83,681 total passengers, posting a 9.7% year-over-year increase. The month-to-month jump from March to April (a 177% increase in absolute numbers) reflects typical seasonal patterns as spring break and Easter holidays drive Mediterranean travel.
What This Means for Crete Tourism
The 16.5% overall growth in April suggests that Chania Airport remains a vital hub supporting Crete's tourism recovery and expansion. International visitors choosing to arrive via CHQ gain direct access to some of Crete's most compelling destinations - the stunning beaches of Balos Lagoon, the historic old town and harbor of Chania itself, and the nearby archaeological sites. The robust international numbers hint at strong demand from European markets in particular.
However, it is crucial to note that this dataset covers only Chania International Airport. Heraklion Airport (HER) and Sitia Airport (JSH), both operated under separate concessions, are not included in these figures. Therefore, this represents a partial view of Crete's overall air traffic and tourism trends. Heraklion, in particular, typically handles significantly higher volumes than Chania.
Looking Ahead
With April's double-digit growth - especially the impressive 26.4% surge in international arrivals - CHQ appears well-positioned heading into the peak May-September travel season. The airport's operators at Fraport Greece will likely see continued pressure on capacity as European tourists plan their summer vacations to Crete.
