The Greek government has approved construction of an asphalt mixing plant for ACTOR A.T.E., a major construction company, to support ongoing work on the Northern Road Axis of Crete (VOAK). The facility will be located near the village of Agios Nikolaos in the Lasithi region, on a plot of approximately 13,096 square meters at Vlastos, outside established settlement boundaries.
The asphalt plant has been authorized specifically to service construction of the Neapoli to Agios Nikolaos section of the VOAK, a significant infrastructure project aimed at improving road connectivity across northern Crete. This section connects two key towns in the eastern part of the island, an area popular with travelers visiting the Lasithi Plateau, Spinalonga Island, and surrounding beaches.
The facility's location in the Vlastos area positions it to minimize disruption to nearby communities while maintaining efficient supply lines to the active construction zone. The plot size and positioning outside settlement limits suggest the facility is designed as a temporary construction installation rather than permanent industrial infrastructure.
ACTOR A.T.E. is one of Greece's largest construction and engineering firms, with extensive experience on major infrastructure projects. Their involvement in the VOAK expansion reflects the scale and complexity of this regional development initiative.
The VOAK project represents a major investment in Crete's road infrastructure. When completed, the highway corridor will provide improved access to the island's northern communities and tourist destinations, potentially reducing travel times for both local residents and visitors. The Neapoli-Agios Nikolaos section is a critical link in this broader transportation network.
Travelers in the Lasithi region may notice increased construction activity and temporary facilities in the coming months as this section progresses. The approval was formally issued on April 9, 2026.
