Island Overview
Crete wakes to a grey ceiling on 13 October, with overcast skies covering the entire island from the far west to Sitia in the east. Temperatures remain warm for mid-October, ranging from 23.5°C in Ierapetra to a high of 26°C in both Elounda and Malia. No dramatic events today, but the first autumn showers have arrived in the northwest, marking a gradual seasonal shift.
West vs East: The Main Divide
The clearest contrast today falls along the east-west axis. Chania records 0.6 mm of rain under persistent light-rain skies, with waves reaching 1.36 m on the exposed northwest coast. Rethymno adds a trace of 0.1 mm. Both western cities remain mild (Chania at 24.7°C, Rethymno at 23.9°C) but beach conditions there are uninviting. Move east past Heraklion and the picture improves: Ag. Nikolaos sits dry at 25.9°C, Elounda at 26°C, and Sitia at 25.1°C. The Gulf of Mirabello offers the best coastal conditions on the island today.
North and South Coasts
Along the northern coast, Heraklion stays dry at 25.5°C with moderate gusts to 24 km/h. Hersonissos is the windiest point on the island at 29 km/h; beach umbrellas will need securing. Malia, just a few kilometres west, is calmer at 13 km/h with a high of 26°C. The south coast brings slightly milder daytime highs but the warmest water: Ierapetra and Makrigialos both reach 24.2°C sea temperature, the highest reading on the island. Conditions there are dry and sheltered from the dominant northerly flow.
Mountain Areas
The White Mountains above Chania and Psiloritis above Rethymno are wrapped in low cloud today. Hikers heading onto exposed ridges should carry waterproofs regardless of the mild coastal temperatures. The Lasithi Plateau in the east stays dry but cool at altitude, likely 8 to 10 degrees below the coastal lowlands.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures remain genuinely pleasant for October, ranging from 22.6°C at Chania to 24.2°C on the south coast. Wave heights are modest across most of the island; Chania at 1.36 m and Hersonissos at 0.84 m are the two exceptions worth noting. UV peaks at index 4 to 5 across the south coast. Sunscreen is still relevant between 10:00 and 14:00, even under overcast skies.
Swim Verdict
Swimming conditions are good to excellent across central and eastern Crete. Sea temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties, calm swells, and dry skies make the beaches around Elounda, Ag. Nikolaos, and the wider Mirabello Gulf the best choices of the day. Skip the exposed northwest beaches around Chania, where light rain and 1.36 m waves make bathing uncomfortable.
Practical Tip for the Day
Go east if your plans are flexible. The corridor from Heraklion through to Sitia combines warmth, dry conditions, and calm seas with the warmest water on the island. Pack a light layer for the evening: temperatures drop to around 17 to 18°C after sunset across most coastal areas.
