Island Overview
Clear skies stretch across Crete on 12 September 2026, with daytime highs between 29.5°C in Sitia and 31.6°C in Makrigialos. No rain is forecast anywhere on the island. Summer conditions remain firmly in place, though overnight temperatures on the north coast are beginning to ease toward 17 to 21°C, an early signal that autumn is edging closer.
Morning Fog in Heraklion
Heraklion is the one exception today. Fog is reported at the capital this morning and may reduce visibility on northern approach roads and at the port during the early hours. This is a fairly typical September pattern caused by warm sea air meeting the cooler land overnight. It should lift by mid-morning as temperatures climb.
North vs South
The south coast is running noticeably warmer overnight. Ierapetra records a minimum of 25.7°C and Makrigialos 25.2°C, barely dropping from their afternoon peaks. This reflects the south coast's sheltered position and its exposure to warmer air masses from the south. On the north coast, Chania and Hersonissos top out at 31°C and 30°C respectively, but nights there cool to 20 to 21°C, making sleep more comfortable without air conditioning.
Mountain Conditions
Psiloritis and the White Mountains are clear of cloud today and fully visible from the coast. September is one of the better months for inland hiking: no rain, no heat haze, and temperatures several degrees cooler than the coast at altitude. The Samaria gorge area is in good condition; anyone heading there should carry at least two litres of water per person.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures hold at 26.1 to 26.8°C across all monitored points, still at peak summer warmth. Wind speeds peak between 10.7 km/h at Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda and 14.8 km/h at Makrigialos. These are light to gentle conditions that present no difficulty for swimmers, paddleboarders or day-trip boats. Wave heights are very low, reaching a maximum of 0.48m at Sitia. UV peaks at 7.3 in Rethymno, rated high on the WHO scale. SPF 30 or above is necessary throughout the day.
Swim Verdict
Ideal. The water is warm, the sea is flat and winds are light across the entire island. There are no conditions today that would warrant avoiding the water at any beach in Crete. The calmest spots for young children or less confident swimmers are Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos, where waves remain under 0.45m.
Practical Tip
UV peaks between noon and 15:00. Set up at the beach before 11:00, move to shade during the midday hours, and return to the water in the late afternoon. The light at that hour is also better for snorkelling. A hat and sunglasses are useful at any point in the day.
