Hikers setting out for the gorges should pack a light layer for the return leg. Some high-altitude routes begin closing in mid-autumn; check local access conditions before departure.

Sea temperatures are uniformly warm from west to east: 26.5°C at Chania and Rethymno, 26.7°C at Heraklion, and 26.8°C at Ierapetra. Wave heights are low across the board. Excellent island-wide. The warmest and calmest water is on the south coast: Ierapetra offers near-flat seas and 26.8°C water, making it the standout choice for a relaxed beach session. The north and east are fully swimmable, with small swell adding gentle motion rather than any real hazard. No location today presents conditions that would deter a competent swimmer.
Practical Tip for the Day
UV peaks between noon and 15:00. Apply SPF 30 or higher before reaching the beach and use a hat or umbrella during those hours. On the south coast, where wind is light, the sun feels more intense than visitors often expect in early September.
