Island Overview
Crete starts 8 September 2026 with clear skies across all ten reporting stations. No precipitation is recorded anywhere, and conditions range from clear to mainly clear from Chania in the west to Sitia in the east. Hersonissos and Malia carry some patchy cloud along the central north coast, but nothing significant enough to affect beach time. High temperatures land between 25 and 29 degrees Celsius, with the warmest readings concentrated in the east: Agios Nikolaos and Elounda both reach 29.3°C, while Sitia stays slightly cooler at 25.4°C.
North Coast vs South Coast
The standout story today is wind, and the contrast between the coasts is sharp. The north is relatively calm: Chania records just 13.1 km/h, Rethymno 21.3 km/h, and Heraklion 28.5 km/h. Further east, Hersonissos and Malia both sit at 22 km/h. The south and east flanks face a different picture. Ierapetra logs the strongest gusts on the island at 43.3 km/h, Makrigialos follows at 39.8 km/h, and Agios Nikolaos and Elounda record 32.7 km/h. This reflects the late-summer meltemi still running through the eastern gulf and the Libyan Sea corridor. Despite the strong surface wind, the south coast is sheltered from ocean swell: Ierapetra measures just 0.3 metres of wave height and Makrigialos 0.46 metres.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno are dry and cloudless today. Ridge temperatures fall well below 20°C at higher elevations. Hikers on the E4 trail or approaching the Samaria Gorge from the plateau should carry a wind layer for the exposed upper sections.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are uniformly warm, ranging from 26.2°C at Makrigialos to 26.9°C at Heraklion. North and east-facing coastlines carry swells of 1.1 to 1.32 metres, lively for small craft but manageable for competent swimmers. UV peaks at 7.45 in Rethymno, placing the entire island in the high category for the full day. Maximum solar intensity falls between 11:00 and 15:00 local time.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are good for swimming island-wide. Water sits at 26 to 27°C, well above the seasonal average. The south coast near Ierapetra and Makrigialos offers the flattest water for families and casual swimmers despite the surface wind. North and east coast beaches suit water sports and confident swimmers. Apply SPF 30 or higher and seek shade during the midday peak.
Practical Tip
Wind is the defining factor in eastern and southern Crete today. The E75 between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia and the roads around Ierapetra see sustained gusts above 40 km/h. Motorcyclists and cyclists should take extra care on exposed coastal stretches.
