Island Overview
Clear conditions dominate Crete on 17 August 2026. No rain is expected anywhere on the island. Skies range from clear in the south and east to partly cloudy along the central north coast and in Sitia. Temperatures peak between 26.3°C in Sitia and 29.5°C in Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. The south coast retains heat overnight, with Ierapetra holding above 24°C after dark.
North Coast and South Coast
Wind is the main dividing line today. Chania is the calmest city on the island at 9.5 km/h, followed by Rethymno at 15.2 km/h, both ideal for beach and water sports. Heraklion sits in the middle at 21.9 km/h. The south coast is breezier: Ierapetra records 30.3 km/h and Makrigialos 26 km/h. Despite that wind, south coast seas are exceptionally flat, with maximum wave heights of 0.34 m at Ierapetra and 0.36 m at Makrigialos, the calmest water on the island today.
Eastern Crete
Sitia is the windiest point on the island at 32.7 km/h, with partly cloudy skies and a 1.18 m swell, the highest wave reading anywhere on the island. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda share gusts of 27.4 km/h. Anyone planning boat trips or stand-up paddleboard sessions along the east coast should go out early, as winds typically build through the afternoon.
The Mountains
Coastal readings give no indication of conditions at altitude. Summit temperatures in the White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis range above Rethymno will run 8 to 12°C cooler than at sea level. Mountain trails are dry and exposed. Carry water, a spare layer, and sun protection.
Sea and UV
Sea surface temperatures are warm across the island, from 25.6°C off Sitia and Makrigialos to 26.6°C off Heraklion. UV peaks at 8.1 in Rethymno and stays above 7.8 at every location, placing today firmly in the High category on the WHO scale. Apply SPF 30 or higher before heading to the beach and reapply after each swim.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are good to excellent across Crete. The flattest, most sheltered water is on the south coast at Ierapetra and Makrigialos. The north coast from Chania to Heraklion offers comfortable swimming with a light to moderate swell. East coast beaches carry some chop today, suitable for swimming but less suited to paddleboarding or kayaking.

If you are based on the east coast and want calm water, the drive south to Ierapetra from Agios Nikolaos takes under 40 minutes and delivers the flattest sea on the island. For those staying in Sitia or Agios Nikolaos, plan water activities before 13:00, when east coast winds tend to strengthen.
