Island Overview
Thursday 24 July brings completely dry conditions across all of Crete, with zero rainfall recorded or forecast at any monitored station. Highs range from 28.4°C in Sitia to 31.3°C in Elounda, and overnight lows stay mild between 22°C and 26°C. Cloud cover varies by location but no area faces the kind of thick overcast that would spoil a beach day. The main variable today is wind, particularly in the centre and east.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast shows a clear west-to-east split. Chania (30.5°C) and Heraklion (30.2°C) are partly cloudy with lighter winds of 16-18 km/h. Moving east, Rethymno, Hersonissos and Malia are all overcast today, though temperatures hold at 29-30°C and no rain is expected. The south coast is the winner on sunshine: Ierapetra (30.6°C) and Makrigialos (31.0°C) sit under partly cloudy skies, sheltered by the island's mountain spine. Ierapetra records a night minimum of 26.5°C, confirming its status as one of Europe's warmest overnight stops in summer.
Mountains and Interior
Hikers in the White Mountains or on the Psiloritis massif will find temperatures 8 to 12°C cooler than the coast. The Samaria Gorge is pleasant early morning but warm at the Agia Roumeli exit by midday. Carry at least two litres of water per person and start before 07:00 if possible.
Sea State and Wind
A moderate northerly is running across the centre and east of the island. Gusts peak at 22.5 km/h in Rethymno, 22 km/h around Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, and 22.2 km/h off Sitia. The west and north-central resort strip see lighter conditions, with Hersonissos and Malia registering 15.3 km/h. Wave heights are low across all monitored stations, from 0.58m at Rethymno to 0.88m off Sitia, placing the entire coast in the calm-to-slight category. Sea temperatures are warm everywhere: 25.9°C off Makrigialos and Sitia, rising to 27.5°C at Rethymno and 27.4°C along the Libyan Sea south coast.
Swim Verdict
Good swimming conditions island-wide. Waves are minimal, water temperatures are well above comfortable bathing threshold, and no reported location shows problematic currents. For the flattest water today, choose the south coast or Elounda Bay, where the northerly wind has the least fetch.
UV and Practical Tip
UV indices reach 8.4 in Chania and 8.5 in Rethymno, placing the whole island in the very high category. Overcast skies on the north coast diffuse rather than block UV, so cloud cover offers no real protection. Apply SPF 30 minimum before leaving your accommodation, reapply after every swim, and seek shade between 11:00 and 16:00. A wide-brim hat and UV-protective sunglasses are advisable for anyone spending more than two hours outdoors.
