Island Overview
Monday 13 July delivers a textbook Aegean summer day to Crete. Clear skies cover every monitoring station from Chania in the west to Sitia in the east, with zero rain forecast anywhere. Daytime highs run from 29.3°C in Sitia to 33.5°C in Elounda. No cloud cover provides any midday relief across the island.
North vs South Coast
The north coast is the most comfortable zone today. Rethymno tops out at 30.1°C with winds barely reaching 13 km/h. Chania peaks at 31.1°C under similar calm. Heraklion reaches 32.4°C with a livelier sea breeze at 21 km/h. Overnight lows around Hersonissos and Malia drop to 22-23°C, keeping nights comfortably cool along this stretch.
The south coast tells a different story. Ierapetra records the highest overnight low on the island at 26.8°C, and afternoon gusts reach 36 km/h, the strongest reading of any monitored location today. Makrigialos also sees winds up to 32.5 km/h. These are not hazardous conditions, but they will be noticeable on any exposed beach.
East Crete and the Mountains
The far east is the hottest zone. Elounda peaks at 33.5°C and Agios Nikolaos at 33.4°C, both with winds near 28 km/h. Sitia runs cooler at 29.3°C but carries the roughest sea on the island at 0.9 metres. Inland, the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno and the White Mountains above Chania sit several degrees cooler than the coast. Hikers benefit from lower temperatures but should not underestimate UV exposure at altitude.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are at their summer best: 26.6°C at Rethymno, 26.5°C at Chania, and a still very comfortable 25.1°C at Sitia. Waves stay below 0.5 metres along most of the island, with Sitia at 0.9 m and the Agios Nikolaos and Elounda area between 0.7 and 0.8 m showing the most movement. The UV index sits at 8.3 to 8.6 across the island, rated very high by international standards. Unprotected skin can begin to burn in under 20 minutes at this level.
Swim Verdict
Good to excellent island-wide. The calmest water is found along the Rethymno and Chania coastlines, making them ideal for families and snorkellers. Sitia is the one location requiring more care: waves at 0.9 m are manageable for confident adult swimmers but warrant caution with children. Sea temperatures everywhere are warm enough for extended time in the water without discomfort.
Tip for Today
Apply SPF 50 before leaving your accommodation, not when you arrive at the beach. With UV above 8, fair skin burns faster than most visitors expect. On the south and east coasts in particular, the persistent afternoon wind creates a misleading sense of coolness while sun exposure continues. Reapply sunscreen after every swim.
