Island Overview
A strong high-pressure system keeps all of Crete dry and sunny on 3 July 2026. Every city in the network reports clear or mainly clear skies with zero precipitation. Daytime highs range from 29.7°C in Rethymno to 34.4°C in both Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, reflecting the east-to-west temperature gradient that sharpens in high summer. Overnight lows remain well above 21°C island-wide.
North and South Coast Compared
The north coast is warm and tempered by a moderate afternoon sea breeze. Heraklion reaches 31.7°C with the strongest gusts of the day at 21.5 km/h, while Hersonissos and Malia settle around 30°C with lighter winds. Chania is comfortable at 30.5°C. The south coast stands out for its warm nights: Ierapetra and Makrigialos record overnight lows of 25.2°C and 25.4°C respectively, running unusually close to their daytime highs. South-coast afternoon temperatures peak at 32.1°C in Makrigialos.
Mountain Conditions
Coastal stations do not extend to altitude, but the White Mountains above Chania and Mount Psiloritis above Rethymno will run 10 to 15°C cooler than the shore. Those driving inland or visiting the Lasithi Plateau should carry a light layer for mornings and evenings.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea surface temperatures range from 24.8°C at Sitia and Makrigialos to 26.0°C at Rethymno. North-coast swell is gentle, with Rethymno the flattest at just 0.34 m. The south coast sees the largest waves of the day: 0.86 m at Ierapetra and 0.84 m at Makrigialos. Both figures sit within the calm-to-slight range and present no safety concern, though the extra motion is noticeable. Winds are moderate island-wide, lightest at Makrigialos (9.8 km/h) and strongest at Heraklion (21.5 km/h). The UV index registers in the very high band everywhere, peaking at 8.65 in Rethymno.
Swim Verdict
Swimming conditions are good at every coastal location today. The warmest water is at Rethymno at 26.0°C, closely followed by Ierapetra at 25.8°C. North-coast beaches offer the flattest surface, making them well suited to snorkelling and families with young children. South-coast beaches are fully swimmable, with a gentle rolling swell to account for.
Practical Tip for the Day
UV peaks between 11:00 and 15:30 local time. At index 8 or above, unprotected skin can burn in under 25 minutes at midday. Apply SPF 50 sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outside, reapply after every swim, and cover up during the central hours of the day. Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person, especially in the eastern towns where the thermometer reaches 34°C.
