Island Overview
A shallow low-pressure system crossing the central Mediterranean is delivering patchy cloud and scattered showers to parts of Crete on 24 May 2026. Conditions split the island into two distinct zones: a wet band running across the north-central coast from Chania through Rethymno to Hersonissos and Malia, and a dry arc covering the south coast and the eastern tip of the island.
North Coast vs South and East
The north-central coast is bearing the heaviest rain today. Rethymno records 5.2 mm and the Hersonissos-Malia stretch 5.5 mm, with skies rated light rain showers at both locations. Chania adds 1.1 mm. Heraklion, sitting between the two wet zones, stays dry but remains fully overcast, reaching 22.5°C. The south coast presents a different picture: Ierapetra is completely dry, touching 23°C, and Makrigialos picks up only 1.9 mm. The warmest and driest conditions on the island today are on the east coast, where Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda post the highest daytime temperature at 23.9°C with no precipitation at all.
Mountain Conditions
Cloud base sits low over the White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis range above Rethymno. Anyone planning to walk exposed ridges or high-altitude trails should carry a waterproof layer. Visibility above 1,200 metres is likely to be reduced during shower periods, and temperatures at elevation will feel noticeably cooler than at the coast.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Seas are calm to slight across the whole island. Wave heights range from 0.32 m off Ierapetra and Makrigialos to 0.80 m off Malia, well within safe limits for most water activities. The strongest winds are concentrated in the east, where Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda gust to 22.2 km/h and Heraklion reaches 20.6 km/h. The north-central and southern coasts are considerably calmer, with winds below 12 km/h. Despite today's overcast skies, UV index values range from 7.6 to 8.1 at all reporting stations, placing the entire island firmly in the very high category. Cloud cover does not meaningfully block UV radiation at these levels: sun protection is required wherever you are on the island.
Swim Verdict
Sea temperatures sit between 19.5°C and 20.1°C island-wide, cool but swimmable for most. The strongest beach conditions today are on the east coast: Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda and the coves around Ierapetra offer dry skies, flat water and the warmest sea temperatures. North-coast beaches are usable during dry spells but shower windows make for an unreliable beach day.
Practical Tip for Today
If your schedule is flexible, travel east. The 90-minute drive from Heraklion to Ag. Nikolaos takes you clear of the shower band and puts you on the driest, warmest beaches on the island. Wherever you end up, apply SPF 30 or higher before heading outdoors.
