Island Overview
Late August delivers typical end-of-summer conditions across Crete today. Skies range from mainly clear in the south to partly cloudy and locally overcast along the central and eastern north coast. No rain is forecast anywhere on the island. Temperatures top out between 26.5°C in Sitia and 29.1°C in Chania and Ierapetra, with overnight lows remaining above 23°C island-wide.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast is divided today. Chania offers the most settled conditions: 29°C, light winds at 15.5 km/h, and a gentle 1.0-metre swell. Heraklion and Rethymno sit in the mid-to-upper 20s with moderate northerlies and partly cloudy skies. Further east, Hersonissos and Malia are under overcast skies with winds around 25 km/h and swells reaching 1.4 to 1.5 metres.
The south coast has a different character entirely. Ierapetra and Makrigialos are recording strong meltemi gusts of 53 to 57 km/h. South-facing bays are sheltered from the prevailing northerly fetch, so wave heights remain low: 0.46 metres at Ierapetra and under 1 metre at Makrigialos. Skies are mainly clear and temperatures peak at 28 to 29°C, but wind chill is noticeable at exposed spots.
The east is the windiest zone on the island. Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda, and Sitia are recording gusts of 37 to 38 km/h with swells of 1.46 to 1.76 metres, the highest readings anywhere on Crete today.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and Psiloritis above Rethymno will run 8 to 12°C cooler than coastal readings. Conditions are dry and suitable for walking or hiking. Afternoon cloud build-up is possible above 1,500 metres. Start early and carry a light layer.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are uniformly warm, from 26.4°C at Makrigialos to 28.0°C at Chania. The UV index peaks at 7.75 in Rethymno and stays above 7.5 across the island, placing it firmly in the high category. Apply SPF 30 or above before 10:00 and reapply after each swim. Wind is the defining variable of the day: the meltemi is moderate on the western and central north coasts and intensifies sharply toward the east and south.
Swim Verdict
Best swimming today is at Chania and Rethymno: calm to moderate swell, water temperatures of 27.7 to 28.0°C, and manageable winds. South coast bays are swimmable despite the strong gusts, but check conditions before renting water sports equipment. Open-water swimming off Sitia and the Elounda peninsula is not recommended today, where swells of 1.5 to 1.8 metres make the sea rough.
Practical Tip
On any east or south coast beach today, secure your umbrella base and keep lightweight items weighted down or stored. Meltemi gusts are exceeding 50 km/h at several south coast stations and can scatter belongings with little warning.
