Island Overview
A uniform layer of cloud stretches across Crete from end to end on 10 October, but conditions beneath it are comfortable. Daytime highs reach 24 to 25.8°C at every reporting station, and the cloud blanket holds overnight temperatures well above seasonal norms across much of the island. Precipitation is essentially absent: Chania registers a trace of 0.1 mm, and every other city records zero. This is soft, transitional autumn weather, not a grey unsettled day.
North Coast vs South Coast
The sharpest contrast today is in overnight temperatures. Heraklion drops to 14.8°C after dark, the coolest minimum on the island and a signal that north-coast nights are cooling down in earnest. Rethymno and Chania hold slightly warmer at 17°C. The south coast is a different story. Ierapetra, Makrigialos, and Malia all sit at 18°C or above at their overnight lows, buffered by the Libyan Sea and sheltered from northerly airflow by the central spine of the island. Visitors sensitive to the cold will find the south and east coasts noticeably more hospitable after sundown.
Mountain Conditions
Cloud base is sitting low enough to obscure the upper ridges of the Lefka Ori and Psiloritis today. Routes above 1,000 metres will see poor visibility and damp, cool air. Lower gorge and foothill trails are perfectly walkable, but a windproof layer is worth carrying from mid-morning. Temperatures fall quickly with altitude under an unbroken overcast sky.
Sea, Wind, and UV
Winds are light across the entire island, peaking at 14.8 km/h in Ierapetra and staying below 13 km/h everywhere else. Wave heights are negligible: the highest reading is 0.42 m off Chania, while most coastal stations sit at 0.12 to 0.26 m. Sea temperatures range from 22.8°C in Chania Bay up to 24.4°C along the south and east coasts at Ierapetra and Makrigialos. The UV index reaches a moderate 5.4 to 5.8 at solar noon. Cloud reduces direct radiation but does not eliminate it.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are well suited to swimming today. Water temperatures are warm, waves are flat island-wide, and there is no swell. Both the north and south coasts offer comfortable entry. The overcast sky keeps the air pleasant without the intensity of high summer. Snorkelling visibility should also be good given the minimal surface disturbance.
Practical Tip
Do not skip sunscreen because of the clouds. A UV index of 5 to 6 falls in the moderate band and is enough to cause sunburn on pale or unprotected skin after an hour or two outdoors. Apply SPF 30 or higher before heading to the beach, and reapply after swimming.
