Back to newsDermatologists recommend choosing a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30, and ideally SPF 50 for Crete's intense summer sun. Both UVA and UVB protection should be listed on the label. A higher SPF number does not mean you can apply less or reapply less often. Apply generously at least 20 minutes before sun exposure, covering all exposed skin including ears, the back of the neck, and tops of feet. Reapply every two hours, and immediately after swimming or sweating. Water-resistant formulas are advisable for beach days. Most people apply far too little, reducing actual protection significantly. For visitors spending long hours at Cretan beaches, carrying sunscreen and reapplying throughout the day is essential to avoid sunburn, which can impact the rest of your trip.
