German Tourist Injured Hiking Gavdos Island Trail

Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A 70-year-old German tourist was injured while hiking on the trail between Korfo and Tripiti on the island of Gavdos, located south of Chania. The man was walking with his wife when the incident occurred. Gavdos is the southernmost point of Europe and a popular destination for hikers seeking remote, rugged terrain. Visitors planning to hike on Gavdos should be aware that trails can be steep, uneven, and poorly marked in places. The island has limited medical infrastructure, meaning evacuation in the event of injury can be slow and complicated. Hikers are advised to wear appropriate footwear, carry sufficient water, inform someone of their planned route, and avoid hiking alone. Older or less experienced walkers should assess trail difficulty carefully before setting out. Emergency services on Gavdos operate under logistical constraints compared to mainland Crete.
