Tuesday, 26 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Fishermen near Elounda, on the northeastern coast of Crete, discovered a suspicious metallic object in the sea, which authorities believe to be a mine. Emergency services and the relevant military or naval units were alerted and are currently on scene conducting investigations and carrying out safe disposal procedures. Elounda is a popular resort area close to Agios Nikolaos, known for its upscale hotels and the island of Spinalonga. While operations are ongoing, visitors should follow any access restrictions to the affected coastal area and stay clear of the water near the discovery site until authorities confirm it is safe. Local authorities are managing the situation and updates are expected once the object has been assessed and neutralized. There is no indication of wider risk to the region at this time.
