WWII-Era Sea Mine Discovered on Crete Beach, Experts Respond

Tuesday, 26 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
A sea mine was discovered in a rocky coastal area on a beach in the Lasithi region of eastern Crete. Greek authorities were alerted and the area was cordoned off as a precautionary measure. Naval explosive ordnance disposal teams were dispatched to assess and safely handle the device, which is believed to be a remnant from World War II, when Crete saw significant naval activity in the surrounding waters. Such discoveries are not uncommon along the Greek coastline. Tourists visiting beaches in the Lasithi area should follow any signage or barriers placed by authorities and avoid rocky or isolated coastal stretches until the situation is fully resolved. If you spot any suspicious object on a beach or in shallow water, do not approach it and report it immediately to local police or the coastguard by calling 108.
