Island Overview
Wednesday 9 July brings clear, hot, dry weather to the whole of Crete. No rain is expected anywhere on the island, and temperatures peak between 29 and 32 degrees Celsius across all regions. Skies are mainly clear from coast to coast, with Rethymno the one exception, carrying some afternoon cloud but no threat of precipitation. This is textbook high-summer Cretan weather: strong sunshine, elevated UV, and warm seas throughout.
North vs South
The north coast sees the most noticeable wind today. Heraklion records the highest gusts at 22.7 km/h, followed by Chania at 20.2 km/h and the resort strip of Hersonissos and Malia at 17.1 km/h. These northerly winds hold daytime highs in the 29 to 30 degree range and keep the atmosphere on north-facing beaches lively without being uncomfortable.
The south coast is considerably calmer. Ierapetra and Makrigialos see winds below 13 km/h, and overnight lows stay above 24 degrees, making the south warmer after dark. The eastern bay area around Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda, and Makrigialos reaches the day's highest temperatures, touching 31.8 degrees, under winds barely exceeding 10 km/h.
Mountain Areas
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif inland from Rethymno will run 8 to 12 degrees cooler than the coast above 1,500 metres. The Lasithi Plateau, sitting at around 850 metres, offers a comfortable escape from coastal heat, with temperatures likely in the low-to-mid twenties and clear skies.
Sea Conditions, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures sit between 24.8 degrees at Sitia and 26.4 degrees at Rethymno, warm enough for extended swimming at any hour. Wave heights are low to very low across all coasts: the highest recorded value is 0.8 metres off Ierapetra, and most locations are well below 0.7 metres. The Gulf of Mirabello is the flattest stretch today, with waves under 0.5 metres at both Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos.
UV is high island-wide, ranging from 8.3 in Heraklion to 8.6 in Rethymno. At these levels, unprotected skin can burn in 20 to 30 minutes around solar noon.
Swim Verdict
Conditions for swimming are excellent across the entire island today. Sea temperatures above 25 degrees, minimal swell, and calm-to-light winds make every coastal stretch suitable for bathing. The sheltered eastern bays stand out for their flat surface and calm exposure, while the north coast offers a refreshing breeze for those who prefer it.
Practical Tip for the Day
UV peaks between 11:00 and 15:00 local time. Apply SPF 30 or higher before reaching the beach and reapply after each swim. A shaded lunch break or a midday visit to one of Crete's gorges or inland villages is a practical way to avoid the sharpest heat of the afternoon without cutting the day short.
