Island Overview
A classic meltemi pattern covers Crete on 5 July 2026. The north coast sits under cloud, the south is clear and warm but carrying strong wind. Highs range from 26.8°C in Sitia to 30.5°C in Elounda, and sea temperatures hold steady between 25 and 27°C across the island.
North and South Contrast
From Chania to Malia, the north coast is overcast or partly cloudy. Rethymno, Hersonissos, and Malia sit under full cloud cover, with a trace of rain in Rethymno (0.2 mm). Winds here are moderate: 14.5 km/h in Chania, rising to 22 to 27 km/h further east. The south reverses every variable. Ierapetra and Makrigialos are clear and warm at 29 to 30°C, but gusts reach 48.6 km/h at Ierapetra and 41.4 km/h at Makrigialos. The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno are funnelling cloud along the north coast while keeping the south dry.
Eastern Crete
The east offers the best balance today. Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda reach 30 to 30.5°C under mainly clear skies, with winds around 30 km/h. The Gulf of Mirabello shelters the coastline, making this the most comfortable beach area on the island today. Sitia is cooler at 26.8°C with gusts to 33.7 km/h and partly cloudy skies.
Sea Conditions and UV
Sea temperatures run from 25.4°C at Sitia to 26.6°C at Rethymno. Waves peak at 1.42 m near Sitia and 1.36 m at Malia; elsewhere they stay below 1.3 m. UV sits at 8.3 to 8.6 across all locations, firmly in the very high category. Apply and reapply SPF 30 or higher throughout the day, and keep children covered during the midday hours.
Swim Verdict
Eastern Crete is the clear pick today. Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos combine clear skies, water at 25.7 to 26°C, and waves below 1.2 m with manageable wind. North coast spots are swimmable despite cloud cover and the sea is warm at 26°C. On the south coast, the water is actually calm with waves below 0.75 m, but sustained winds above 40 km/h will make beach comfort difficult from midday. Morning swims along the south coast are fine; afternoons are not.
Practical Tip
Wind on the south coast peaks between 14:00 and 18:00. If Ierapetra or Makrigialos is on your itinerary, arrive before noon. UV peaks island-wide around midday, so shade and water are essential wherever you are. A light layer for the drive back from any northern or elevated spot is worth having in the bag.
