Island Overview
Midsummer conditions are fully established across Crete today. Every forecasted city reports clear skies and zero precipitation. Temperatures range from 28°C in Sitia to 32°C in Elounda, with the warmest readings concentrated along the eastern Mirabello Gulf. The mountain ranges, including Psiloritis above Rethymno and the White Mountains above Chania, will be several degrees cooler at altitude but remain clear and accessible throughout the day.
North Coast vs. South and East
The north coast from Chania to Heraklion sits comfortably between 29 and 30°C, with light to moderate winds ranging from 12.2 km/h in Rethymno to 18.6 km/h in Heraklion. Rethymno is the calmest spot on the island today, making it well suited to flat-water activities and unhurried beach days. The south and east coasts are a different picture: Ierapetra peaks at 33.5 km/h, Makrigialos at 28.3 km/h, and both Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda reach 25.1 km/h. These are Etesian meltemi winds, normal for late June in this part of the Aegean. They bring welcome cooling to the hottest stretch of the island, but lightweight beach umbrellas and shade structures will need securing.
Overnight temperatures also separate the two coasts. Ierapetra holds at a minimum of 25.6°C, the warmest night on the island. Heraklion drops to 18.5°C, giving north-coast visitors comfortable sleeping conditions with minimal need for air conditioning.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are warm and uniform, from 23.2°C at Sitia to 24.6°C at Rethymno and Ierapetra. Wave heights are small across all monitored locations: the largest swell today is 0.80m at Sitia. UV index peaks at 8.7 in Rethymno and sits at 8.4 or above everywhere on the island. A UV index of 8 is classified as very high, meaning unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes during peak hours.
Swim Verdict
Green flag conditions across the island. The water is warm and the swell is negligible at every monitored beach. The north coast from Chania to Hersonissos offers the flattest surface water, with waves between 0.66m and 0.76m. On the eastern coast, stronger winds at Ag. Nikolaos, Elounda, and Sitia generate some surface chop, but wave heights remain well within a comfortable swimming range. South coast beaches at Ierapetra and Makrigialos are particularly calm despite the strong wind, with waves at just 0.42m.
Practical Tip for Today
Apply SPF 50 sunscreen before leaving your accommodation and reapply after every swim. With UV at 8 or above across the entire island and no cloud cover for relief, protection is not optional today. A hat, sunglasses, and a rest in the shade between 13:00 and 15:00 will make a measurable difference by the end of the afternoon.
