Island Overview
Crete opens 23 June 2026 with a clean sheet of blue from end to end. Every reporting station from Chania in the west to Sitia in the far east records clear or mainly clear skies and zero millimetres of rain. This is textbook early-summer Cretan weather: dependable sunshine, a warm sea, and the first hints of the seasonal northerly winds building along parts of the northern coast.
North Coast vs South Coast
The main story today is the temperature gap between north and south. Chania, Rethymno, Hersonissos, and Malia stay in the comfortable mid-to-upper 20s (26 to 28°C), held in check by a moderate sea breeze. The south and east run noticeably hotter. Agios Nikolaos and Elounda both reach 31.5°C, Makrigialos touches 30.8°C, and Ierapetra, sheltered from northern winds by the Dikti range, peaks at 29.7°C with a sultry overnight low of 25.4°C. Visitors sensitive to heat will find the north and west coasts the most manageable today.
Mountain Conditions
No forecast stations sit at altitude, but the White Mountains above Chania and Mount Psiloritis above Rethymno will be several degrees cooler than the shore. Anyone descending the Samaria Gorge should expect genuine heat at lower elevations. Carry a minimum of two litres of water per person and start early.
Wind and UV
Wind speeds are moderate across the island. Heraklion records the strongest gusts today at 24.6 km/h, with Sitia close behind at 24.1 km/h. Chania is the calmest of the major cities at 13.1 km/h. UV indices are uniformly very high, ranging from 8.35 in Heraklion to 8.7 in Rethymno. At category 8, unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes. Apply SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors, reapply after every swim, and limit direct sun exposure between 11:00 and 16:00.
Sea Conditions and Swim Verdict
Sea temperatures across Crete run from 23.2°C at Sitia to 24.8°C at Ierapetra: all comfortably warm for extended swimming. Wave heights are small island-wide. The south coast is the flattest, with Ierapetra at just 0.22 metres and Makrigialos at 0.36 metres. The north and east see gentle swells of up to 0.94 to 0.98 metres, well within comfortable range for most swimmers and suitable for children. Today is a good day to swim anywhere on the island.
Practical Tip for the Day
If calm, flat water for snorkelling or paddleboarding is your priority, the south coast between Ierapetra and Makrigialos offers the glassiest conditions on the island today, combined with the warmest sea temperatures. Pack sun protection and more drinking water than you think you need: the south coast offers less natural shade than the old towns further north.
