Greece Warns EU Biometric Border System May Disrupt Summer Travel

Thursday, 9 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Greece's airport authority chief has raised concerns that the European Union's new Entry/Exit System (EES), a biometric border registration program for non-EU travelers, could cause significant delays at Greek airports during the peak summer season. The system requires travelers from outside the Schengen Area to register fingerprints and facial scans at border checkpoints, a process that critics warn will slow passenger flow considerably. Greek airports, including Heraklion and Chania in Crete, handle millions of arrivals between June and September. Airport officials are urging EU authorities to delay or phase in the rollout to avoid bottlenecks during the busiest travel period. Tourists from the UK, US, and other non-EU countries should monitor updates before travel, allow extra time at passport control, and check with their airline or tour operator for the latest entry requirements.
