Back to newsKomos is one of Crete's most rewarding beach destinations, located on the southwestern coast near Matala in the Heraklion regional unit. The wide sandy beach is known for its dramatic sunsets, best viewed from the dunes in the early evening hours. Beyond its natural appeal, Komos holds significant archaeological value: excavations have uncovered a Minoan port town dating back over 3,500 years, making it one of the island's most important Bronze Age sites. The area is also linked to the legend of Polyphemus, the Cyclops of Homer's Odyssey, reflecting the deep mythological heritage of this coastline. Visitors should note that part of the beach is protected as a loggerhead sea turtle nesting zone, so access to certain sections may be restricted during summer. The site is reachable by car from Heraklion in approximately one hour.
