Strong Winds Delay Evacuation of Injured German Hiker from Gavdos

Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
A German tourist was injured while hiking on Gavdos, the small island located south of Crete and the southernmost point of Europe. Emergency services responded to the incident, but strong winds in the area are currently delaying the evacuation and transfer of the injured hiker to Crete for medical treatment. Gavdos is a popular destination for hikers and travelers seeking remote, unspoiled scenery, but its isolation means emergency response times can be significantly extended, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Visitors planning to hike on Gavdos or other remote areas of Crete should inform someone of their route, carry sufficient water and supplies, and monitor wind and weather forecasts before heading out. Ferry connections to Gavdos from Paleochora and Sfakia are also subject to cancellation when strong winds occur, which can affect both arrival and departure plans.
