Man Found Unconscious in Agia Irini Gorge, Crete

Sunday, 21 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
On Sunday at around noon, hikers discovered an unconscious man in the Agia Irini Gorge, located in the Selino region of southwestern Crete. The man, believed to be a local resident in his sixties, was found unresponsive on the gorge trail. Emergency services were alerted and responded to the scene. The Agia Irini Gorge is a popular hiking destination, particularly known as a less crowded alternative to the famous Samaria Gorge. The trail runs approximately 9 kilometres through dramatic scenery and is frequented by tourists during the summer season. Visitors planning to hike the gorge are reminded to carry sufficient water, wear appropriate footwear, and inform someone of their plans before setting out. Hiking alone in remote gorges carries additional risk, and starting early in the morning is strongly advised to avoid midday heat.
