Friday, 3 July 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A PhD researcher from the Technical University of Crete has won recognition at the SkyImpact Challenge, an international competition focused on the design and development of the new Heraklion International Airport, known as the Kastelli Airport. Dimitris Zopounidis, a doctoral candidate at the university's Data Science Laboratory, earned the distinction for his research contributions to the project. The new airport is being built near the town of Kastelli, east of Heraklion, and is expected to open around 2028 with a capacity of up to 18 million passengers per year. For visitors to Crete, this development signals significantly improved air access to the island in the coming years, with the new facility set to replace the current Nikos Kazantzakis Airport and handle larger volumes of international flights.
