Heavy Rainfall Boosts Crete's Water Supplies After Shortage Concerns

Tuesday, 5 May 2026/CretaOne/1
Crete has recorded a significant improvement in water reserves following above-average rainfall across the island. The Regional Unit of Heraklion saw the most notable increase, with precipitation levels running 57% higher than usual. This comes after prolonged concerns about water shortages that had affected parts of the island in recent seasons. The improved rainfall has eased pressure on local water supplies, benefiting both residents and visitors. Tourists staying in the Heraklion area can expect normal water availability at accommodations throughout their stay. If you are traveling to Crete during or after wet weather periods, be aware that mountain roads and hiking trails, particularly in the Lefka Ori and Dikti ranges, may be slippery or partially flooded. Check local conditions before heading to gorges such as Samaria, as water levels can rise quickly after heavy rain.
