Monk Rescued After 72 Hours Trapped in Crete Gorge

Saturday, 25 April 2026/CretaOne/1
A 41-year-old monk from Volos was rescued after spending 72 hours trapped in a gorge in Crete. He had fallen into the ravine and taken shelter in a cave, where he remained for three days before passing hikers heard his cries for help. Rescue teams reached him and found him severely dehydrated and badly injured. He was evacuated and received medical treatment. This incident is a reminder that Crete's gorges and mountain trails, while spectacular, can be dangerous, especially for solo walkers. If you plan to hike in areas such as Samaria, Imbros, or other ravines, always carry sufficient water, a charged phone, and ideally hike with others. Inform someone of your planned route and expected return time. Stick to marked paths and check conditions before setting out.
